Sponsoring Family and Domestic Helpers on a UAE Golden Visa

The Golden Visa is usually sold on its length. For most holders, the sponsorship rules end up mattering more day to day, because they are meaningfully wider than standard UAE residency and they remove the deposit that normally comes with sponsoring anyone.

Who you can sponsor

Family sponsorship rules and the number of domestic workers permitted can vary by emirate and by category, and they are adjusted from time to time. Confirm your specific position with ICP or GDRFA before making arrangements that depend on it.

The deposit difference

Under standard UAE residency, sponsoring a dependant normally involves a refundable financial guarantee lodged with the authorities. It is not a fee, but it is capital sitting still, and for a family of four or five it adds up.

The Golden Visa does not require that guarantee for dependants. You still pay the per-person visa costs, which are charged separately for each family member, but the deposit itself falls away. For larger families this is one of the more tangible financial differences between the two visas, and it rarely appears in the headline comparisons.

Sponsoring domestic staff

Domestic worker sponsorship is one of the more searched aspects of the Golden Visa and one of the least clearly explained. The essentials:

The common misunderstanding is treating the Golden Visa as though it removes employer obligations. It changes who sponsors and on what terms. It does not remove your duties as an employer.

The rule that matters most for families

A standard UAE residence visa is normally cancelled if the holder stays outside the country for more than six months continuously. Dependants are exposed to the same logic through their sponsor.

Golden Visa holders are not bound by that rule. For a family that splits time between countries, or has children studying abroad, this is frequently the deciding factor rather than the visa length. It is the difference between residency you have to actively maintain and residency that simply holds.

What it does not do

Worth being straight about the limits:

Before you plan around it

Sponsorship benefits only exist once you hold the visa, and the category you qualify under determines whether that is five years or ten. If you have not confirmed your route yet, start there. Our two-minute eligibility check covers the six official categories and the evidence each one needs.
